Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kombucha?

Kombucha is a fermented tea based drink that originated from Eastern China probably more than thousand years ago. Due to the diverse live culture strains found in Kombucha, it is a beverage with tremendous health benefits, especially for our gut system.

Since 80% of our immune system lies in the gut, it is very important to maintain a balanced and healthy gut flora for a strong immune system and optimal health.

What are those brown lumps/strands/strings that are floating in my Kombucha?

Those are strands of healthy culture! They are not visibly present at the time of bottling and forms afterwards as an indication that the product still has living and active cultures in your Kombucha. The longer the product is bottled, the more culture strands form. They are perfectly fine to drink. You can gently shake the bottle or use a strainer to sift it out before drinking it, if you wish.

Are there any unpleasant side effects from drinking Kombucha?

Sone people might experience some discomfort from drinking Kombucha at the beginning. This is known as the “Healing Crisis”. Kombucha works by helping our body get rid of built-up toxins that have accumulated over the years.

Some symptoms of "Healing Crisis" include stomach upset/bloating, breakouts or headaches. Always drink plenty of water to help flush out the toxins. The symptoms should get better within the next few days. Otherwise, reduce the intake and let your body take over for a while to do the healing.

I had the same Kombucha drink before but why does it taste different?

As Kombucha culture is a living organism, no two "scobies" (the symbiotic bacterial and yeast containing base that is used for the fermentation process) are the same. There are hardworking scobies and scobies that are more laid back. This can affect the taste of the Kombucha drink. Several other factors such as weather, temperature, length of fermentation and the sweetness of fruits can also affect the taste. This is what makes live culture so interesting and we are constantly amazed by the different Kombucha tastes!

Does Kombucha have an expiry date? How do I keep it fresh?

Kombucha does not actually expire. However, we put a "best before" label on our Kombucha as they are not pasteurised and the fermentation process continues even after bottling. The flavour may change over time and it will age the longer it is kept, just like wine! If you prefer your Kombucha to taste more sour, simply leave it at room temperature for a few days to allow it to continue to ferment and age to your liking.

To keep it fresh, we recommend placing the unfinished drink back in the refrigerator once it has been opened. Do remember to cap it tight so that no insects can get into it!

How much sugar is there in one bottle of Yocha Kombucha? Does it contain caffeine?

For sugar content, please refer to the nutrition facts on the product pages.

Caffeine: Yes, Yocha Kombucha does contain caffeine as the base of the drink is made from tea (which contains caffeine). However, the caffeine level is only 1/5 of a regular cup of tea because we use one tea bag for every litre of brew

Is Kombucha halal? Does it contain alcohol?

Yes, Kombucha is considered halal because the small traces of alcohol do not lead to intoxication and naturally occur through fermentation. It is similar to yoghurt, tempeh, kimchi, sauerkraut, etc. The amount of alcohol in Yocha Kombucha is 0.2%.

**Note that Yocha Kombucha drinks are not halal certified.
